Primary Clinical Applications: Control of Acid-Related Disease

The potent and prolonged reduction in gastric acidity achieved by PPIs makes them highly effective for the management of conditions related to excess or misplaced stomach acid.



  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): By lowering acid concentration, PPIs relieve the painful symptoms of heartburn and allow the inflamed lining of the esophagus (esophagitis) to heal.

  • Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD): They promote the healing of ulcers in the stomach and duodenum by reducing the corrosive action of acid, giving the mucosal lining time to repair itself. This is critical for ulcers caused by excess acid or by the use of certain anti-inflammatory compounds.

  • Helicobacter pylori Eradication: PPIs are an essential component of the multi-compound regimen used to eradicate the H. pylori bacterium, a primary cause of peptic ulcers. The reduced acidity environment created by the PPI allows the co-administered antibiotics to be significantly more effective against the organism.
